The Jolly Sportsman East Chiltington is somewhat of a Sussex institution when it comes to a quality yet informal  country dining experience.

It has beeJolly Sportsman East Chiltingtonn awarded many accolades over  the years, including winning Sussex dining pub of the year three times in a row, subject of national press reviews, holding 2 AA rosettes and recommended in the Michelin and Good Food Guides.

Nestled on the north side of the South Downs near the sleepy village East Chiltington,  the Jolly Sportsman is located on a quiet no through road just 20 minutes away from Brighton and 5 minutes away from Lewes and Ditchling. 

Bruce Wass is the head chef and proprietor and his family run team have been providing fine cooking to Sussex and beyond since 1998. Prior to this Bruce ran an equally impressive restaurant called Thackeray’s House which was situated in Tunbridge Wells, this was after learning his culinary arts around London.

A Seasonal and Daily Changing menu

Jolly Sportsman East ChiltingtonAs you would expect, the menu changes with the seasons, with an emphasis on locally sourced produce.

The fish comes mainly from Newhaven and Hastings, beef and lamb from the South Downs and game from Sussex and Kent.

The bread is also baked on site.

Typical starters one might find on the menu include pork rillettes with a crispy duck salad and celeriac remoulade or Pickled mackerel fillet with a hand picked crab salad, crispy oyster and pickled cucumber and caper mayonnaise whilst mains may include Herb crusted hake fillet with chive beurre blanc and Partridge with quince and juniper.Roaring Fire at the Jolly Sportsman, Sussex Restaurant

Decadent desserts, like the Chocolate and morello cherry block with salt caramel ice cream and honeycomb or Bramley apple & quince crumble, with all ice creams and sorbets made in house.

The wine list is extensive with an emphasis on French, Spanish and Italian smaller independent producers but with plenty of new world favourites also.

The real ales are brewed locally and are all served straight from the cask. Non-alcoholic and seasonal cocktails are also available, as well as 80 different malt whiskies.
