{"id":7314,"date":"2020-03-05T10:18:07","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T10:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/jobs\/?p=7314"},"modified":"2026-01-13T16:37:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T16:37:05","slug":"helen-hutton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/jobs\/blog\/helen-hutton\/","title":{"rendered":"Helen Hutton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meet Helen Hutton co-owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/tropical-sushi-hove\/\">Tropical Sushi<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Please can you share a whistle-stop tour of your career?<\/h2>\n<p>Circus tricks, creating a performer&#8217;s agency, studying event management, then a chance encounter with some rather talented <a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/jobs\/chef-jobs-brighton-hove\/\">chefs<\/a> \u2013 Tropical Sushi was created.<\/p>\n<h2>How and when did you train in hospitality, was there a particular reason for this career path?<\/h2>\n<p>Looking back, I have always loved working with people in the service and <a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/jobs\/brighton-hospitality\/\">hospitality industry<\/a>, from performing in some pretty cool live shows, through to the everyday of welcoming guests to the <a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/\">restaurant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Your job in three words:<\/h2>\n<p>Teamwork Engaging Fast-paced<\/p>\n<h2>Favourite aspect of the job for Helen Hutton?<\/h2>\n<p>The team I work with every day \u2013 as important as my family \u2013 we support and care for each other through the <a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantsbrighton.co.uk\/\">restaurant<\/a>. And, of course, the many loyal customers that have supported us from the start!<\/p>\n<h2>What excites you most about your role?<\/h2>\n<p>The unpredictable nature of the restaurant means we never know who is coming in to dine with us \u2013 and we have had some pretty amazing visitors over the years!<\/p>\n<h2>The toughest aspect of your job?<\/h2>\n<p>The catering industry runs at a relentless pace, and you gotta keep up!<\/p>\n<h2>Is there a moment in your career that stands out above the rest?<\/h2>\n<p>I think when the restaurant received its first award, after facing such competition, it was a real moment. Previous to that, setting up an agency at such a young age, and working with some global brands was really cool.<\/p>\n<h2>What are you most proud of?<\/h2>\n<p>That we are a relatively small site serving sushi, and yet we have managed to maintain a buzzy busy restaurant despite the masses of alternatives that pop up in the Brighton area.<\/p>\n<h2>Would you agree that hospitality is a male dominated industry?<\/h2>\n<p>Possibly. There are more men working in the industry, but I think women&#8217;s voices are heard equally.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you summarise what it is like working in a male dominated industry?<\/h2>\n<p>I work with guys every day and honestly, there is no gender issue at Tropical Sushi, we just get on with doing what we are doing.<\/p>\n<h2>What has been your biggest challenge?<\/h2>\n<p>Opening the restaurant and encouraging people to try our Latin fusion menu.<\/p>\n<h2>Have there been any obstacles in the way of your professional development?<\/h2>\n<p>I have been really lucky so far and I approach every obstacle with a sense of inquisitive positivity.<\/p>\n<h2>Do you have children?<\/h2>\n<p>A gorgeous girl, yes.<\/p>\n<h2>Has raising a family affected your career development?<\/h2>\n<p>I am super at juggling and the team are very supportive if I need to take time out.<\/p>\n<h2>Who have been the mentors for Helen Hutton?<\/h2>\n<p>I find inspiration from all sorts of people \u2013 no one really stand out.<\/p>\n<h2>What has been your philosophy that has seen the successful development of your career?<\/h2>\n<p>A positive outlook and the appreciation that most things are pretty achievable with some thought.<\/p>\n<h2>What advice would you offer for women looking to embark on a similar career?<\/h2>\n<p>Go for it!<\/p>\n<h2>Words of encouragement for women who aspire to reach a senior position in hospitality?<\/h2>\n<p>You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time but you can&#8217;t please all of the people all of the time. Just believe in yourself and don\u2019t let any gender issues swerve your ambition!<\/p>\n<h2>Do you have a go to or failsafe plate of comfort food?<\/h2>\n<p><a
