Upstairs at The Joker
Cocktail bar, games room and generally all round stunning venue, there really isn’t any reason why Upstairs at The Joker isn’t top of everyone’s date night list. Formally a late night gig venue, the space has been completely transformed and is now unrecognisable from its former self. Describing itself as the diamond in the rough, Upstairs at The Joker is an Instagrammers dream, from the sleek and stylish but slightly rustic interior to stunning drinks served in ‘real’ glassware. A local jazz artist also performs here, adding to the laid back and luxurious atmosphere that oozes from this bar.
The bar is only accessible by walking through the downstairs pub, pushing open a heavy oak door and ascending upstairs. It’s almost as though you are part of an exclusive members club! Greeted by friendly, knowledgeable but unfussy staff, the first thing that catches the eye is the opulent hand carved rosewood bar stacked high with unusual spirits and traditional glassware.
Second is the plush velvet seating, marble tables and grand windows that adorn the room, transporting you into true 1930’s class. Walk round into the adjoining room to find uncycled cinema seating, shabby chic armchairs, and a marble mantelpiece. One thing’s for sure, this venue is a second date confirmer, if you know what we mean.
Described as traditional with a twist, the cocktail list has something for everyone. Expertly curated and mixed by the professionals, choose from six house cocktails or from a list of the classics. If cocktails aren’t your thing, fear not, as the spirit selection here is second to none.
One of our favorites on the list is the SUEÑO, a mix of Havanna Club’s finest aged rum, apricot, caramel, then finished with an aromatic leaf perfume. The gin bowls here are pretty much famous amongst Brightonians, mixed with botanicals and herbs offering the humble Gin & Tonic with a twist. The team also make a killer Negroni, speaking from experience!
The Games Room
Not only is Upstairs at The Joker a stunning venue with one of the best drinks lists in town, but it also boasts a wonderful games rooms. Equipt with a pool table, dart board, and a wifi enabled TV, the room is available for private hire for up to 20 people. Opening hours for the games room are in line with the pub downstairs, head over to their website to find out more.
Downstairs, the pub at The Joker offers up its own charm. Flying the flag for traditional English pubs with real ales, craft beer is certainly not left behind here with local breweries such as Gun and Cloak and Dagger available in cans. If a glass of wine is what you are after, the list here is carefully selected with a wide range of red, white, rose and bubbles from around the globe to suit every palate and budget. Food is from the wonderful Lost Boys Chicken, offering finger licking food to customers (quite literally).
