Starfish & Coffee is a multi-award winning neighbourhood cafe specialising in high quality brunch dishes near Queens Park, just a 10-15 minute walk from Brighton Pavilion, and we’re looking for a new Head Chef to join our team.

We are not your average cafe and our standards are high. As a result we have won five Brighton Restaurant Awards for Best Cafe or Best Brunch, and Time Out gave us the accolade of being their “Number 1 Brunch Spot in Brighton & Hove”.

We are seeking an experienced Head Chef, or a Sous Chef who’s looking to take the next step, to lead our kitchen and oversee our brunch service operation. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills and a positive energy that inspires the whole team. Our workplace culture means as much to us as the quality of food we produce, and this starts at the top.

As the Head Chef, you will play a crucial role in menu development, maintaining the highest standards of food quality, and have a have a deep understanding of food safety and preparation, and a commitment to delivering an exceptional cafe experience.

This Role Includes

  • Lead and manage the kitchen team, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among staff members.
    Oversee all aspects of food preparation and production, ensuring adherence to quality standards and preserving our five star food hygiene rating.
  • Developing our current menu and producing innovative weekly specials that reflect seasonal ingredients and while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
  • Train, mentor, and motivate kitchen staff to enhance their skills and foster a positive working environment.
  • Monitor inventory levels, order supplies, and manage kitchen budgets efficiently.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen.
  • Managing team rotas & holiday cover.
  • Collaborate with front-of-house staff to ensure seamless service delivery and guest satisfaction.

Skills Required

  • Proven experience as a Head Chef or Sous Chef in a similar professional kitchen environment.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety practices and regulations.
  • Exceptional culinary skills with a passion for food production and presentation.
  • Demonstrated ability in team management, including supervising staff effectively.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • A relevant culinary qualification or equivalent experience is preferred but not essential.

Additional Information

  • 37.5-42 hours per week over 5 days (generally around 8am-4pm).
  • No evening shifts.
  • Between £15-16 per hour + equal share of tips (usually around £2.50-£3.25 per hour worked).
  • 28 days holiday & statutory pension scheme.
