Workplace Recycling Rules Are Changing

Here’s What You Need to Know

Guest post: by Alliance South East.

From 31st March 2025, businesses in England will need to follow new legal requirements on how they manage workplace recycling. These changes aim to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions, and improve recycling across the UK. If you run a business or manage a commercial property in Brighton, Hove, or Sussex, here is what you need to know.

Why Are the Rules Changing

The government is introducing these regulations to create a more effective and consistent recycling system. The goal is to reduce landfill waste, lower environmental impact, and encourage better recycling habits in workplaces.

Who Must Comply

The new legislation applies to all businesses and non-domestic properties with ten or more full-time employees. Whether you operate a café, office, retail shop, or hospitality venue in Brighton, these changes will affect you.

What Are the New Workplace Recycling Requirements

Businesses will be required to separate waste into the following categories for collection:

  • Plastic, metal, glass, paper, and card must be separated for recycling.
  • Food waste must be collected separately and cannot be disposed of down drains or sewers.
  • General waste that cannot be recycled should be kept apart from other waste streams.
