Great Cocktails, Good Vibes!
When I heard The Breakfast Club was coming to Brighton, I was SO excited. I had been to their Spitalfields London branch a couple of times, and every experience was a good one. They are quirky, fun, friendly and have great food, so there was no reason why they shouldn’t be in Brighton!
Born in 2005 by 2 brunch enthusiasts, their first restaurant opened it’s doors in 2005, in a small cafe in Soho. They painted it egg yolk yellow and filled it with toys and memorabilia from their childhood bedrooms, and from then grew with instant popularity, until now they have 6 stores across London and now one in Brighton.
Great Location and Interior
The Breakfast Club have found a fantastic spot – right in the heart of Brighton’s lovely lanes in the old Fat Leo site, near to the town hall on Market Street.
It’s easy to spot with it’s bright yellow façade, large open windows*, and baby blue tables out the front, and I am sure is going to be a hit in the summer for pre/post shopping drinks and snacks, and of course an almighty, delicious brunch to start your weekend off nicely.
The restaurant is decked out with communal high tables at the front by the large windows, booths for sharing and more tables upstairs so there is plenty of room. The toilets are located downstairs and are painted in a flamingo pink, with old fashioned tiles and soap dispensers. Myself and my partner both commented on the silver handles they have on the toilet seat for lifting – it’s the little things!
Now before you judge me, I was here in the evening. It was a Friday night, hence the margarita pic. We were arrived and seated straight away by the trendy staff, and told there were £5 cocktails on that evening so of course I was sold. They have a great choice of cocktails, including a range of classics with a Breakfast Club Twist such as Bloody Mary (which is excellent by the way), espresso martinis and a morning mojito with additional grapefruit which sounds lovely. I have been wanting to plan a boozy brunch for a while, and this is definitely going to be the right place.
Alongside the cocktails they have wines, beers, smoothies and juices, and an indulgent shake made with peanut butter, real vanilla icecream and banana.
So as you can see from the picture I ordered the margarita, and my partner, despite it being a Friday night felt like a soft drink and had to have the peanut butter shake. The drinks came out really quickly with hardly any wait at all which was good as I was thirsty! The margarita was really well balanced and they kept it simple, served in a small glass with ice cubes and a small wedge of lime. The shake was very good, it was thick, creamy, and not shy of the ice cream, all of the flavours were a stand out, and I would highly recommend you trying this some time!
Now as we were here in the evening, we were given the dinner menu which is served from 5pm – close. They have a selection of bar snacks and appetisers to start with, including buffalo wings, skin on chips, mac and cheese and nachoes with a choice of toppings. We wanted something to share tonight, and even though I really wanted to try the buffalo wings (as I had heard good things), we settled on the large plate of nachoes to share topped with grilled chicken.
These were very large – be prepared! But came out really quickly looking and smelling delicious. They certainly gave off the ‘wow’ factor when they arrived at the table. They were smothered in melted cheddar, home made salsa, red jalepenos, guacamole and sour cream. There was a dusting of smoked paprika over the plate too which added a smokiness to the dish. The grilled chicken had the tasty charred taste from the grill and we were given a generous portion of thin slices, it was all very filling. There were plenty of corn chips so do ask for an extra side of guacamole or salsa so you can continue munching. I also liked the micro coriander on top, and the jalepenos were the perfect heat for me.
It was relatively quiet when we were there, it was around 7pm when we arrived and it had only been open a week. The atmosphere was still there, with a good mix of tunes playing, and a nice mix of people – some making the most of the £5 cocktails, and others there for some drinks alongside food. The staff were all really friendly and helpful, and seemed to be enjoying themselves which is always nice to see!
The menu is big, but not too overwhelming, as there is a good selection so it really depends on what you feel like. They have club classics such The Breakfast Club Club Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich, or a Chilli Bowl; Corn Tacos with a choice of beef, veggie, chicken or fish; Breakfast Club Burgers; Salads, or Late Late Breakfasts if you fancy it!
I decided to go with the Beef Chilli, to keep with the Tex Mex theme I had already had that evening, and my partner loved the sound of the Buttermilk Fried Chicken.
This came served in a brioche bun, with a side of coleslaw, lambs leaf lettuce and skin on chips. The chicken portion was massive, and really tender, it was topped with melted cheddar and had Sriracha in the batter too which was a nice twist.
My Chilli Bowl was huge! It would be a great one to share with some drinks. Served on a silver tray lined with paper, was a layer of there crispy skin on chips, it was topped with a reasonably spicy chilli, grilled cheese (optional extra), and sliced chillis. On the side were ramekins of guacamole, sour cream and salsa to give it a fresh touch. The chilli was delicious, with loads of flavour, and I would definitely recommend getting the cheese too as it was very tasty. I wasn’t able to finish it so they kindly let us take our left overs home, and it was even better heated up the next day for lunch!
Something Sweet To Finish
If you can manage it – we weren’t able to that evening, they have several desserts to choose from which all sound delish. These include Baked Cinnamon Cheesecake, BC Pecan Pie and BC Apple Cobbler served with custard or vanilla ice cream. I would love to head there after some late night shopping on a Thursday for something sweet before heading home, or after a movie in the week.
The Morning After
As you can probably tell by the name, The Breakfast Club are well known for their brunches which are inspired by American diners, and dives and I can confidently say they are awesome. With dishes such as Breakfast Burritoes, Chorizo Hash Browns and Huevos Rancheros, this is an exciting new brunch venue to join Brighton. Open from 8am and served until 5 everyday, it’s an excellent post night out brunch destination, that you can enjoy generous, well priced tasty brunches alongside a Bloody Mary or maybe a Morning Mojito to cure that Brighton hangover of yours.
I will definitely be coming back to The Breakfast Club soon, I love their brunch, and the evening food was just as good. If you haven’t made it there yet to check it out, I would recommend heading there soon as if it is going to be anywhere as possible as there London branches you may expect queues!
