Julien Plumart: A Masterclass in French Pâtisserie on Queens Road

Centrally located halfway between Brighton Station and the seafront, Julien Plumart is more than just a Brighton café; it is a vibrant slice of Paris in the heart of the city. As you step inside the elegant, intimate space on Queens Road, the bustle of Brighton fades away, replaced by the sweet aroma of butter, sugar, and world-class coffee.

Think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets a Raymond Blanc-trained pastry master. This award-winning boutique is a sensory playground where traditional French techniques meet playful, modern ingenuity. Whether you are popping in for a morning croissant, a light lunch with friends, or a romantic afternoon tea, Julien Plumart offers an unforgettable experience that has become a cornerstone of Brighton’s food scene.

Award-Winning Pastries and Savoury Delights

The counter at Julien Plumart is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, brimming with intricate pastries, tarts, and celebration cakes made by hand from scratch every single day. Using only the finest ingredients, Julien and his team follow time-honoured recipes while adding a “Plumart twist” that customers have come to adore.

It isn’t just about the sweets, either. The café offers an authentically French breakfast and light lunch menu, making it the perfect spot to escape the office or fuel up for a day of shopping. From savoury treats to their legendary croissants – which recently ranked in the Top 10 at the Best Croissant UK competition (October 2025)—the quality is unrivalled.

The Accredited Master of the Macaron

If there is one thing Julien Plumart is famous for, it is the macaron. Having received advanced training at the prestigious L’Ecole de la Pâtisserie Lenotre Paris, Julien has perfected these delicate almond meringue treats. The boutique showcases a vibrant collection of 18 signature flavours, ranging from classic Pistachio and Salted Caramel to exotic combinations like Rose and even Mojito.

These “exotic bursts of Parisian heaven” are available to enjoy in-store, but they also make the perfect gift.

RB loves the Julien Plumart bespoke box to take home, utilise their Click & Collect service, or even send “Macarons in the Mail” to loved ones across the country.

Afternoon Tea and Special Moments

For those looking to celebrate, Julien Plumart offers a truly special Brighton Afternoon Tea. Served with friendly, charming service (often by French waiters who add to the authentic atmosphere), it is a wonderful way to mark a birthday or anniversary.

Interestingly, Julien’s quest for perfection includes a focus on balance; many of his recipes are thoughtfully designed to reduce fat and sugar content without compromising on the rich, indulgent flavours. The result is a selection of well-balanced pâtisserie that allows the high-quality ingredients to shine.

The Man Behind the Menu: Julien Plumart

Julien’s journey began in the French Alps, helping in his family’s restaurant before formalising his training at age 15. After working as a private chef in St. Tropez and honing his skills under the legendary Raymond Blanc, Julien “dropped anchor” in Brighton in 2004.

His dedication to the craft reached a national stage in 2021 when he reached the final of Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off: The Professionals. For Julien, the pursuit of perfection never ends, and his mission remains simple: to create delicious pâtisserie that helps customers build long-lasting memories with the people they love.

The croissants are fantastic, simply the best this side of Paris. I also adore the pistachio eclairs, then again the tropical tarte is amazing and the chocolate ganache with crunchy biscuity base is a favourite. It’s the reason I have my gym membership!
