Bringing a slice of Argentina to Church Road, Café Malbec is a must for lovers of food and wine in the city. Their selection of traditional Argentinian empanadas and tapas is excellent, but search and you will find a selection of sharing boards. Cheese lovers will be drawn to the selection of four cheeses with Malbec sauce and crackers, but they should also take note of the “Provoleta con pesto de tomate”. When it comes to cheese and pubs your mind instantly thinks of the traditional ploughman’s lunch, but at Hove Place they have taken things up a level. This popular bistro pub in the heart of Hove likes to do things a little bit differently. Alongside their normal pub menu, Hove Place have an extensive deli menu that is bursting with cheesy goodness. The variety of cheese and charcuterie available would put most restaurants to shame, and celebrates the produce of the UK. That is thanks to their supplier being GB Charcuterie, which means you will be getting some of the best produce available on these shores. This Hove deli, wine bar and small plate restaurant is one of the unsung heroes of the city’s food and drink scene. These guys know their stuff, and making the most of their ingredients is what they do best. When it comes to cheese they source only the finest examples from Neal’s Yard Dairy, matching it with their homemade pickles and chutneys to great aplomb. Choose a single cheese from the menu as part of a complete meal or go for the full selection. Not strictly a cheeseboard, but too good to omit, the Gnocco Fritto Misto at Edendum is a real treat. This sharing dish consists of a selection of Italian charcuterie, fried pizza dough balls and superb Italian cheeses. This dish can be enjoyed as a sharing starter to a meal or would make a superb lunch for two with a bottle of wine on the side. The combination of cheese, ham and deep-fried pizza dough is so simple, and yet works so perfectly, that we cannot fault it. A dish to take your time over and make the most of, you could easily be transported to a sun drench piazza if you really use your imagination.
Another pub that wants to break free of the ploughman’s is The Better Half in Hove. This quirky backstreet pub has plenty of character and plus points, and they score extra points for their cheese offering. Situated on the menu under the moniker of “The Cheesy Half” their English cheeseboard features six cheeses and sourdough bread and crackers. Not resting at this, they also offer a glass of port or Moscato to go with your cheese should that float your boat. We salute you The Better Half for making the right choice in placing your cheese on its own pedestal and not lumping it in with the desserts. Salut!
La Cave à Fromage do more than just sell cheese for you to take home. Pop in for a delicious lunch or tasty treat throughout the day. La Cave à Fromage have a tasting café where you can stop off for a cheese or charcuterie board with a matched wine. Alternatively, you can try one of their discovery experiences where you get to sample cheeses and hams from specific regions all washed down with handpicked wines. If you fancy something hot they even have that covered with dishes such as baked camembert, raclette or even fondue.
Brighton’s newest French restaurant is clearly going to make the most of their cheese offering. In amongst the menu of superb small plate French classics you will find the “Les Assiettes” where a gourmand charcuterie and cheese board or stand-alone fromage board can be found. Their ever-changing range of cheeses always features some classic such as Roquefort or Brie de Meaux, with some less well known varieties such as Beaufort or Fourme au Maury. No French meal would be complete without a cheese course, and Petit Pois are one of the best in Brighton for those looking to dine a la Français.
