It’s clear from the shiny, industrial kitchen that the Social Board team means business, especially when it comes to sarnies. Their homepage uses a massive font to welcome you with a SEXY SANDWICHES slogan and we’re there for it, salivating and submissive, to sample the swank.
A quick scan of the menu certainly hits the sweet spot, with words such as ‘Wagyu Fillet Beef’, ‘Cluck Me’ and, erm, ‘Italian Job’ sticking out. They’re having fun with the sandwich titles and who are we to argue… especially when they can back up the talk with mouthfuls as moreish as these.
Mother Clucker
We couldn’t resist this intriguingly named sandwich (careful how you order it) so we dived straight into this Southern-style fried chicken, sweet chilli mayo, jalapeños, salsa and red onion delight. The homemade bread is lightly floured, and fresher than a spring daisy, with more than enough oomph to fill your belly. Inside the Mother Clucker, the tender chicken with a crunchy, spicy coating makes a great offset to the soft roll and mayo, fired up with chilli and those jalapeños calmed by the salad leaves.
Salt Beef Served Right
A Reuben is often a favourite among salt beef aficionados and the Social Board way sees layers of homemade meaty slices served with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, mustard, gherkins and watercress. It oozes with taste, smothered in a way that drips down your chin for a second luscious licking.
To wash it all down, one naughty diner among us enjoyed a Tiger beer and the other a Big Five Smoothie, packed with pineapple, mango, strawberry and kiwi with a promise of better skin and improved immunity which, by contrast, the beer didn’t. But both were delicious.
Steak loaded fries
Quite remarkably, the menu offers loaded fries that are topped with 28-day-aged sirloin steak and homemade pepper sauce but, apologies, we didn’t try it on this visit. Our bellies couldn’t quite handle the 7oz extra meat as a ‘side dish’ (it’s a main for sure!) but we did manage to slip down the Katsu chicken topped fries, which were deeply flavoured with that famous curry sauce and a splattering of sesame seeds, ginger and spring onions, mixed into a little bowl of delight. Recommended. And if that wasn’t enough, everything is served on really nice plates. It’s time to get Social!
