A Warm Welcome and An Ideal Setting

From the moment we arrived, Gayle’s friendly demeanour made us feel instantly at ease. Known for her genuine hospitality, Gayle greets her locals by name and is in her element on a busy Sunday. The pub’s atmosphere is equally inviting, with clean, spacious seating and cosy spots featuring a crackling fireplace for colder months. When the weather is warm, the beautifully manicured garden is the place to be, complete with heaters and a well-fenced play area for the kids. With free on-site parking, and convenient public transport options, Ladies Mile Pub is a perfect destination for all Brighton & Hove families and worth a visit for those travelling from further afield too.

A Culinary Delight

The true star of our visit was undoubtedly the #1 BRAVO award-winning roast. We were greeted by Ammie, whose accommodating service enhanced our experience. Faced with the dilemma of choosing between the rare, perfectly roasted beef rump and the slow-cooked pork belly with crackling, Ammie suggested a little of both. Obviously, I was thrilled with this recommendation.

Now, here’s where it gets personal. After spending considerable time (post-lockdown) hunting for the perfect crackling around Sussex, I was astounded that Ladies Mile Pub hadn’t been on my list.

Imagine my delight…the pork belly, slow-cooked for an impressive 12 hours, was a succulent masterpiece while the crackling was, without a doubt, the most incredible, light, and crispy I had ever tasted. It was a triumph of texture and flavour that had me regretting the time wasted. Jamie, the talented chef (with Michelin-star experience), keeps his secret recipe close to his chest, but it’s clear that his crackling is a revelation.

The beef rump, cooked to a glorious rare, was so tender it sliced like butter and was presented with the most divine Yorkshire puddings. These giant national treasures achieved a perfect balance of crispy edges with fluffy, pillow-soft centres. For true gravy enthusiasts, I highly recommend asking for an extra pot of rich, homemade gravy. The generous initial serving is outstanding, but that additional pot is ideal for pouring into your Yorkshire pudding.

A Taste of Vegetarian Delights

My partner chose the vegetarian option, a delicious Wellington featuring butternut squash, Puy lentils, and mushrooms, wrapped in a crisp pastry. This Wellington was a vibrant and flavourful alternative, embodying the perfect balance of textures and tastes with a hint of curried spice for a fresh take on the traditional roast flavours.

Accompaniments That Shine

There were also plenty of moreish accompaniments. The carrots were glazed to perfection, adding a subtle sweetness that complemented the hearty main dishes. The seasonal vegetables, including buttered greens and cauliflower cheese, were cooked with an expert touch—each bite bursting with flavour and perfectly seasoned. The pigs in blankets were indulgently smothered in our lush meat gravy, and the unique pork and apple stuffing was another revelation—a crispy, golden exterior and a traditional, soft, sweet, and savoury interior that was perfect for mopping up the glorious gravy.

Sweet Endings and More

After our sumptuous main courses, we couldn’t resist the dessert menu. The house brownie, a gooey, delicious creation with just the right amount of set, changes daily. One day it might be salted caramel, the next a decadent Malteser variety.

The kids shared this heavenly treat with vanilla ice cream, while my partner and I savoured the assiette—a trio of desserts that included sticky toffee pudding, a fresh waffle drizzled with salted caramel and topped with ice cream, and our own indulgent portion of that delectable brownie.

Perfect Setting for Families and Furry Friends

The pub’s garden is not just for dining; it’s also an ideal spot for sports fans to catch their favourite games. Inside, you’ll find a cosy bar with beautiful original stained glass features and a pool table to while the day away. But what truly sets the Ladies Mile Pub garden apart is its consideration for our four-legged friends. The garden is wonderfully dog-friendly, complete with offcuts of the roasts offered for your canine companions and individual water bowls. Dogs are part of the family here, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed meal with your furry friend by your side.

We enjoyed a full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc recommended by Ammie, which paired beautifully with our meal but the choices were endless and my partner was pleased to see they served our favourite pint, Brighton’s own Neck Oil by Beavertown. There’s also a great selection of cocktails, sparkling wines, and all the classics. As the sun kissed our cheeks, we took in the vibrant atmosphere of the garden, watching our kids play and the pupster happily settled with a delicious treat.
