Seafood and Sunshine at The Regency – A Brighton Institution on the Seafront

When the sun comes out in Brighton, there’s a collective, unspoken agreement: we’re all going to the beach. Sunglasses and swimsuits come out, and it’s not just us – people travel from here, there and everywhere to enjoy our whimsical pebble waterfront. You’ll see people shuttling towards the water at the first sign of sunshine and, if you follow them, you’ll inevitably land at The Regency.

Originally converted to a restaurant in the 1930s, The Regency feels exactly the way a seaside restaurant should – confident, unfussy and proud. For decades, it has consistently served quality seafood to residents and visitors alike, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Whether you’re popping in for a morning coffee, firmly planting yourself for a platter of fresh catch, or fancy a good old fish ’n’ chips after your swim, they have it all. While much of this kind of nostalgic, post-beach fare seems to be quickly disappearing, The Regency remains reassuringly steady – and the outdoor seating is a huge plus too.

A Brighton seafront classic

It may only be early spring, but an uncharacteristically hot day wasn’t about to go to waste, so we made good use of it, sitting right under the sun. Everything on the menu sounded enticing. Unsure where to begin, we decided to ask for recommendations, which was probably the best way to go. Within moments, we were greeted with a cold, crisp glass of Pinot Grigio – the perfect choice for a light lunch. Next, a rundown of what was fresh, what was good, and what we were sure to love. Our energetic server essentially said, ‘leave it with me’, and we happily did.

A strong start with seafood classics

An arsenal of condiments appeared first, ready to match our every need. Along with this came bread and butter, which we were strictly instructed to save for later because ‘if you start eating it now, you will never stop!’

A platter of piping hot scallops arrived, which to me are always a showstopper. Dressed with a rich garlic butter, the aroma alone was enough to lure us in. Cutting into the scallops took no effort whatsoever, each bite better than the last. Naturally, no garlic butter was left behind – it was all soaked up by the pillowy soft bread we had very wisely reserved for this reason.

Alongside them came a beautifully presented octopus tentacle, charred in all the right places. Lying on a sweet, earthy purée, the octopus was cooked just right. A wonderfully grilled curl at the end, soft and meaty throughout. Octopus can very easily become overcooked and rubbery, but here it was handled with skill.

Simple grilled fish by the sea

Next, the main course. Two plates of simply, yet expertly grilled fish – precisely what you want to eat by the ocean. It’s always good to see a whole fish on a plate. The grilled sea bream came with unmistakably crackly skin and flesh that lifted away from the bones with ease. Accompanied by none other than the beloved chippy-style chips with a mandatory heap of ketchup, I can’t imagine a better seaside meal than this.

Not only that, but a very generous Greek salad with fresh cucumber, sweet tomatoes, tart olives and salty, creamy feta brought a much-welcomed lightness in between mouthfuls. The filleted sea bass was equally well cooked. Each fillet, once again, was served with that desirable crispy skin and delicate, glossy flakes of white fish, melting as soon as they entered my mouth.

Homemade Tiramisu

By this point, we were totally and completely stuffed. Feeling as if we’d already caught the sun, we weren’t sure we’d be able to squeeze in any dessert. It seemed impossible – that was until we were told about the homemade tiramisu…

A fluffy, airy, satisfyingly cold dessert was the best ending we could’ve asked for, and one we very much appreciated. Slightly on the sweeter side but not at all cloying, this really hit the spot. Well-proportioned layers, each with their own distinct role, bringing a new flavour to every bite. A finishing bitterness from the coffee gave us a necessary, however unwanted, kick back into reality.

A Brighton institution that delivers

The Regency is, quite simply, an iconic Brighton institution. It has endured because it delivers consistently delicious food, generous portions and an undeniable atmosphere. It’s good – there’s no doubt about that. The menu stretches far beyond what we sampled, from grilled and fried classics to pastas and risottos, so there’s no way you’ll be lost for choice.

The age-of-elegance aesthetic and energy bring that little something special. The Regency offers a slice of Brighton’s colourful history, and what better way to learn than by tasting it. Make sure you visit soon.
