The Bali Brasserie Hove – Malaysian & Indonesian Restaurant

A legendary underground restaurant on First Avenue in Hove, the Bali Brasserie has been serving extraordinary Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine for over thirty years. Warm, vibrant and utterly distinctive.

Why you’ll like The Bali Brasserie

Tucked beneath the elegant streets of First Avenue, just a stone’s throw from the Hove seafront, the Bali Brasserie is one of those rare restaurants that feels genuinely timeless. An underground gem with an atmosphere all of its own, this is a place that has been welcoming diners for over three decades and shows absolutely no signs of losing its magic. If you have never visited the Bali Brasserie Hove, consider this your sign to go, and go soon.

From the moment you descend into the warmth of this Hove restaurant, you are transported somewhere far removed from the Sussex coast. The colours, the aromas, the sounds; everything about the Bali Brasserie tells you that something rather special is about to unfold on your plate.

Start Your Evening in the Tropical Bar

Before you even think about the menu, the Bali Brasserie invites you to linger a little longer in their wonderful Tropical Bar, a vibrant, characterful space perfect for pre-dinner drinks. It sets the tone beautifully for the meal ahead and gives the whole evening a leisurely, celebratory feel that so many Brighton and Hove restaurants simply cannot match.

A Kitchen Rooted in the Flavours of the Far East

The cuisine at Bali Brasserie Hove draws its inspiration from the extraordinary culinary tapestry of Malaysia and Indonesia, two regions that together encompass an astonishing diversity of flavour, technique and tradition. Malaysian cookery reflects the remarkable blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences that have shaped the country over centuries, and each of these threads is visible on the Bali Brasserie’s menu. Indonesian food, meanwhile, offers an invigorating contrast of tastes and textures, with regional variations that shift dramatically from island to island across more than three thousand islands. No other corner of the Far East embraces quite so many influences or offers quite such a wide variety of dishes, and the Bali Brasserie brings all of that richness together under one Hove roof.

TC and the Story Behind the Restaurant

The Bali Brasserie is the creation of owner TC, Tanjit Calais, a man whose passion for Far Eastern cuisine is both deeply personal and wonderfully infectious. Originally relocating from Worthing in the late 1980s, TC built his restaurant around the knowledge and love of Malaysian cooking he developed through extensive travels in the region, particularly in Malaysia where his family still live today. That personal connection gives the Bali Brasserie a sense of authenticity and warmth that no amount of interior design can manufacture; it comes from somewhere genuine.

TC’s culinary credentials are also rather impressive. He was chosen to cater for H.R.H. Prince Charles at the Brighton Royal Pavilion, which as endorsements go is about as distinguished as it gets. Cuisine fit for a Prince, served on a quiet avenue in Hove. Not bad at all.

The Indonesian Rijsttafel, a Feast for the Table

The undisputed star of the menu is the Indonesian Rijsttafel, or Rice Table, a magnificent house speciality that consists of fifteen different dishes served together in a glorious spread. It is a feast in the truest sense of the word; a journey through Indonesian cooking that lets you taste and explore at your own pace. For groups in particular, the Rijsttafel is an unforgettable way to spend an evening, and the Bali Brasserie captures everything that makes this style of cooking so endlessly satisfying.

Bali Brasserie – Weekly Offers

The Bali Brasserie in Hove is also excellent value, with a thoughtful range of offers running throughout the week. Sunday to Thursday, diners can enjoy a three-course meal that includes an eat as much as you like hot buffet main course, a genuinely generous proposition. There is also a two-course bar menu available every day at lunch and in the evenings (excluding Thursday evenings), offering a substantial choice of starters and main courses that makes the Bali Brasserie a brilliant option whether you are dropping in for a quick midweek bite or settling in for a longer evening.

The Perfect Venue for Groups and Special Occasions

If you are looking for somewhere to mark a milestone, host a celebration or plan a private event, the Bali Brasserie Hove is an outstanding choice. The space lends itself beautifully to gatherings of all sizes, from intimate dinners and Brighton weddings to full venue buyouts. TC and his team are delighted to discuss your requirements and can even arrange entertainment on your behalf, making the whole process wonderfully straightforward.

The Bali Brasserie – One of Hove’s Most Beloved Restaurants

What keeps people returning to the Bali Brasserie year after year, and many have been coming for twenty years or more, is not just the food, remarkable as it is. It is the warmth. The sense that you are always welcome, always remembered, always made to feel at home. In a city as well-fed as Brighton and Hove, that kind of hospitality is genuinely precious.

Whether you are a long-standing regular or a first-time visitor, the Bali Brasserie Hove delivers something that very few restaurants in the area can. A truly distinctive dining experience, rooted in culture, steeped in flavour and served with real heart. If you enjoy exploring beyond the familiar and want to visit somewhere that feels like a genuine discovery, this is absolutely the restaurant for you. Pair your visit with a walk along the Hove seafront beforehand, or follow dinner with a stroll to Hove Lawns; the evening practically plans itself.

The Bali Brasserie Hove is located on First Avenue, Hove.

Very rude manager. Dirty plates with half eaten food on, that were sitting on the cocktail bar for too long. Manager got abusive when we asked politely if someone could move them. Very odd behaviour. Grubby and dated place.

This restaurant is a favourite with our two young children. It’s a family run business with owners living above the restaurant along with their son who also manages the place also. The food is so tasty and we have never had a bad dish there. The owners and staff really try hard to make your experience there an enjoyable one. We look forward to returning soon.

A Hove institution and one I would highly recommend.

If you are looking for something modern, innovative and expensive then don’t go here.

The Bali Brasserie is a Hove institution which has been around for 15 years at least.

Expect a warm welcome and definitely go for their rice table!

We will be going back for karaoke – or to see a few of their live acts.

There aren’t many places like this left and everyone should go once!
