A Calm Start
On a particularly sunny and bright November morning, my friend Kate and I hopped on the train from Southwick to Brighton. We tottered down Trafalgar Street towards the heart of The North Laine.
At 10 a.m. on a Tuesday, Brighton is still very much asleep, and it’s one of my favourite times to walk the familiar streets. Usually packed with tourists and revellers, this moment of calm offers a unique opportunity to enjoy our beautiful town before the inevitable buzz takes over.
Locally Roasted in the North Laine
A short walk from the station, en route to Kensington Gardens, we passed The Trading Post Coffee Roasters on Sydney Street, home to their local roastery. One of nine locations along the South Coast, this café delights visitors with exceptional pastries, drinks, and the intoxicating aroma of expertly roasted coffee beans.
Exploring Kensington Gardens
Just a minute further along, we entered Kensington Gardens, arguably the most famous street in North Laine. Known for its street vendors, artisan treats, and eclectic shops, you’ll find vintage clothes, piercing studios, art galleries, and ancient artefacts that embody Brighton’s unique charm.
Prime People-Watching with Plenty of Seats
At the entrance to this iconic street sits The Trading Post Coffee Roasters Kensington Gardens. With plenty of outdoor patio seating, it’s one of the best spots for people-watching. Inside, huge wraparound windows provide a cosy setting to sip and relax while watching the world go by.
The upstairs dining area offers a spacious and comfortable escape, and in warmer months, the rooftop terrace absolutely shines—a must-visit when it reopens in the spring.
All Aboard the Polar Espresso!
As we arrived, we were greeted by the loveliest team of smiley baristas. They introduced us to their premium espresso options and the shiny new Polar Espresso Winter Blend. With notes of stone fruit, cinnamon, and almond, this limited-edition roast is perfect for gifting. Its holiday aroma and flavour were irresistible, and I couldn’t leave without picking one up for my coffee-loving bestie.
Quick Bites and Sweet Treats
For those on the go, The Trading Post stocks plenty of quick bites under their cloche. From savoury croissants and cheese toasties to sinfully sweet treats and flapjacks, you can grab a coffee and lunch in a snap.
Velvety with Chocolate Aromas
Settling into a comfortable corner, we ordered our drinks and brunch. My latte was divine! Did you know The Trading Post offers a selection of espressos? Much like a wine tasting, the baristas can walk you through the blends of the day to pair you with the perfect brew.
I opted for the Mono Loco espresso—smooth, chocolatey, and just the right pick-me-up. It was absolutely delicious!
Bacon and Avocado Deliciousness
Our brunch arrived, picture-perfect. We started with the Bacon & Avocado Benedict: fluffy English muffins, smashed avocado, wilted spinach, two perfectly poached eggs, thick slices of smoked back bacon, and a generous drizzle of sensational hollandaise sauce. It was perfection on a plate.
A Stroke of Foodie Genius
Next was the Halloumi & Mushroom on Pitta, my personal favourite. Golden, crispy halloumi paired with slow-roasted portobello mushrooms, creamy avocado, and herbaceous oil atop a soft Mamoosh pitta.
The dish’s crowning glory was a hot honey drizzle—a stroke of foodie genius that balanced sweet, salty, and spicy notes beautifully. It was an absolute showstopper.
Why Trading Post is Taking Off
There’s a reason why The Trading Post Coffee Roasters are popping up all over the South Coast. Their outstanding coffee, exciting dishes, and consistent quality have earned them a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Whether it’s whole beans for local businesses or brunch shared with friends, their commitment to excellence shines through. Thank you for having us – Kate and I will definitely be back soon!
