Looking for inspiration for where to find the tastiest plant-based dishes in the city?
Brighton-based music journalist Amit Sharma has been a vegetarian since he was eight, and mostly eats vegan at home. He runs local guide Brighton Bars and Bites, and is also a Restaurants Brighton writer and content creator – so it will come as no surprise that he’s seriously into food.

We asked him for a few of his standout vegan and vegetarian dishes in Brighton and Hove. Here are a few delicious favourites to dig into this Veganuary:
Vegan standouts
- Oyster mushroom yakitori skewers (Bonsai Plant Kitchen) – marinated in soy, agave, ginger and garlic, grilled over Japanese coals, finished with Sichuan chilli oil, with Dom Sheriff’s signature blow-torched Dirty Rice on the side.
- Spicy jackfruit biryani + the classic black dhal (Permit Room) – big flavour and the ultimate comfort-food pairing. A go-to.
- Svamptoast (Embers Brighton) – fresh avocado, scrambled tofu and Newhaven-grown Billington’s oyster mushrooms on toasted sourdough – breakfast of champions.
- Malt & Pepper (Fourth And Church) – malted ice cream with puffed rice, shortbread and peppered caramel – vegan, creamy and pure comfort.
Vegetarian standouts
- Gnocchi sorrentina (Fatto a Mano) – baked gnocchi with tomato, mozzarella, parmesan and basil.
- Corn ribs (Halisco, Preston Street) – coated in rich garlic butter and hot paprika – best with an extra-spicy mezcal cocktail.
- Skillet potatoes (Burnt Orange) – with herb cream and sheep’s cheese.
- Fire It Up Cheese (The Coconut Island) – paneer cubes in a sweet Indo-Chinese sauce with a flaming hot pineapple curry.
- Samosa chaat (Indian Summer, East Street) – crispy and crunchy, topped with yoghurt plus tamarind and mint chutneys, alongside the tandoori paneer.
