Brighton Restaurant News, Alfresco Dining and Summer Spritzes This Week
Hello friends,
Have we all settled back into normality after that epic solar eclipse spectacular? It was great to see so many people looking up from our wonderful rock as two spheres seemed to collide in the vastness of space, wasn’t it? And then the meteors rained down, too. We certainly inhabit an incredible universe.

It’s true that we’re all made of stardust, but many teenagers are the real stars of the day, as A-level results are here, with GCSE results following next week. Whether you’re celebrating a brilliant result, commiserating over a less-than-brilliant one, or simply supporting someone through the emotional rollercoaster, we think every result deserves a meal out.
Ready to celebrate? Check out our fine-dining restaurants. Didn’t quite go to plan? Our Brighton comfort-food guide has you covered.

Let’s go outside: Alfresco Brighton
Despite the briefest mercy from the sun thanks to the moon, the heatwave summer continues, and that means al fresco time. Down on East Street, BRAVO Best Lunch winner Kindling has taken dining out into the street, and neighbour Indian Summer has tables on the pavement.

Here are five of our other favourite places to eat in the fresh air:
- Burnt Orange – Tucked behind a jasmine-covered wall in a beautifully secluded former coach house, its courtyard feels like a little Mediterranean escape in the heart of The Lanes.
- 2. The Canopy – Hidden from the city bustle, its leafy garden, beneath a magnificent fig tree, is a peaceful oasis for long lunches, brunches and lazy drinks.
- Bohemia – Choose between people-watching on the terrace or sunshine drinks on the rooftop garden.
- Woodfire Camping – For something completely different, dine around a huge open fire in the Sussex countryside, with communal tables, live-fire cooking and overhead stars.
- Terra at Tottington Manor – For a change of scenery, its covered pergola looks across the South Downs, complete with fire pits, blankets and a surprisingly splendid sheep soundtrack.

There’s still time for tea
Afternoon Tea Week is still the hot ticket in town, so we sent Mari to Blossom’s for a Japanese twist on the tradition where she sampled Dorayaki for the first time.

Food for thought: Sustainability and single-use plastic
What happens when a Brighton food business decides that single-use plastic simply isn’t good enough? Our latest case study looks at how Sea Lanes is tackling the issue, the changes they’ve made and what it tells us about the bigger challenge of building a more sustainable food city. It’s a fascinating look at what can happen when sustainability moves from a nice idea to something that actually has to work in the real world.

RB Diary
It’s holiday season and we are a skeleton crew but it is always the right time to pop down to Cin Cin to see what they are up to and Jude did a grand job of showing us what she found.
Ellen had a photoshoot at Petit Pois and Il Bistro, Harvey had a shoot at Lima Nikkei and I watched the eclipse at Coastal at the Mercure.
And do keep your eyes on Mowgli’s Instagram for a very special announcement on 17 August! Details are under wraps, but we hear that the chefs have been busy creating something fresh and fabulous!
Yours, with things still looking up,
Torsten and Team RB x
