This week: Bank Holiday Brighton: best brunches, Reggae BBQs & a hot new launch

Hello friends,

Here you come again: the so-called “last hurrah of summer” late August Bank Holiday is upon us, which means one final long weekend to squeeze every last drop out of the season. Preferably at a table with friends, something delicious on a plate and a cup of ambition in hand.

And who knows? We might even get an Indian Summer. More on that in a bit.

As of this afternoon, the forecast is looking distinctly British. But water is needed and drizzle might prove reassuringly familiar. In the week that we said goodbye to the incomparable Dolly Parton, we remember one of her most enduring pearls of wisdom:

“If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

Either way, brunch can last ‘til lunch, roasts can command an entire afternoon, and drinks can be nursed into the night. Viva, Bank Holiday Brighton!

BRAVO to these brunches – five of our favourites

A smattering of goodies, scattered across town, because it’s a Bank Holiday and your weekend is worth it.

  • Jo & Co, Hove – All-day brunch done brilliantly, with build-your-own pancakes, shakshuka and top-quality local produce.
  • Starfish & Coffee, Queen’s Park – A much-loved local favourite serving creative brunches, excellent coffee and some seriously good seasonal specials.
  • Moksha, North Laine – A Brighton institution where legendary hash browns, fluffy pancakes and hearty shakshuka make brunch worth queuing for.
  • À Table, Kemptown – Mediterranean-inspired brunch with Turkish eggs, spicy shakshuka and a gorgeous hidden garden to enjoy it in.
  • Embers, The Lanes – Brunch gets a smoky, fire-cooked makeover here, from wood-fired breakfasts to steak and eggs.
